Excitement mounts ahead of Bredagh’s annual GAA evening

Bredagh’s annual GAA discussion evening ‘Bredagh talks Sam/Liam’ takes place this year at the Wellington Park Hotel on Thursday September 4 at 8.30pm.

The prestigious event, which is sponsored by the First Trust Bank has once again attracted an all-start cast.

Sports journalists Martin Breheny and Paddy Heaney are joined this year by Armagh's All-Ireland winning goalkeeper and personality Benny Tierney.

Busy Championship weekend for South Belfast footballers

The Down Championship roars back into action this weekend with a number of crunch fixtures for both Bredagh and Carryduff.

Bredagh’s senior footballers line out against Kilclief at Newcastle on Saturday in an eagerly anticipated Intermediate Championship quarter-final showdown (throw-in 2pm).

The Ormeau Road club’s senior ladies face an equally tough examination on Sunday evening when they fight it out with Downpatrick at Carryduff for a place in the Senior Championship final (throw-in 7pm).

Barnes joins legends at top table of Irish sport

Just after one o’clock on Saturday, August 9, 1952, a crowd of several thousand gathered outside Belfast’s Great Victoria Street train station to await the arrival of the Dublin train. 

Undeterred by the incessant rain, the people of Belfast had turned out in force to welcome home Ireland’s first-ever Olympic boxing medallist, John McNally from Cinnamond Street in the Pound Loney. 

Thunderous applause and cheering greeted the teenager as he left the train and he was engulfed by well-wishers

The Bronze Bombshell

Paddy Barnes received Ireland's first boxing medal in 16 years in Beijing on Sunday morning.

The North Belfast man was presented with his medal by Ching-kuo Wu, a member of the International Olympic Committee

The jubilation followed a bitter semi-final defeat for Barnes to reigning world champion Zou Shiming, who on Sunday went on to claim China's first-ever Olympic gold medal in boxing.

Barnes was bitterly disappointed with the 15-0 score and most observers thought he had scored points,



Rivals all set for Casement derby

Two Belfast clubs could book their place in the semi-final of the Antrim senior football Championship this weekend. 

One will emerge from the derby clash at Casement Park between St John's and champions St Gall's (Sunday, 6.30pm), while St Paul's face Rasharkin on Friday night in their quarter-final.

With Lámh Dhearg awaiting the winner of the St Paul's- Rasharkin contest, and Cargin in line for the winners of St John's and St Gall's, an all-Belfast final is still on

Homecoming for bronze medal winner Paddy Barnes
