Building Queen’s contacts Brick by Brick

The man behind the refurbishment of one of the most famous buildings in South Belfast is to represent Queen’s University alumni in the United States at a major Irish-American award ceremony.

Ian Brick, a member of both the Queen’s Foundation and Alumni Associations, will appear at the Irish Echo Golden Bridges Award in Boston’s JFK Library on Wednesday October 1.

Examining the future after GCSE results

HUNDREDS of young people  in South Belfast took their latest step on the educational highway last week, as they opened the envelope containing their GCSE marks.

For the first time, young people received marks from all the education boards on the same day.

The South Belfast News visited Methodist College and Wellington College to talk with those learning their fate.

Methodist College pupils did extremely well in the exams, with several pupils obtaining straight A* grades.

Residents take the hump over speed ramp problems

LISBURN road residents have hit out at the Department of Environment saying road ramps contributed to high flooding in the area the weekend before last.

During the recent torrential rainfall, residents at Great Northern Street said gushing streams of water past their doorways, were aided by the speed ramps in the area. 

Complaints were also made on how often drainage grates were being cleaned out in the area.

City Hospital needs culture of change

The City Hospital has been criticised by the main health watchdog here after an unannounced hygiene inspection. 

The hospital is in need of a “culture change” according to the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority.

No area in the hospital achieved a full compliance score, with the accident and emergency department gaining only partial compliance.

SDLP Health spokesperson Carmel Hanna, who trained to be a nurse at the hospital, said it must acknowledge the results of the inspections.

Eggheads fried by Botanic team

A team from a South Belfast pub has become one of the few teams to emerge victorious from a notoriously difficult BBC television quiz.

Loser’s Corner, representing the Botanic Inn, defeated the Eggheads on the eponymous show, broadcast on Monday evening (August 25), winning £6,000 in the process.

The team is made up of a mixture of staff and regulars at the Malone Road venue, and included assistant bar manager Terry Kavanagh, barman Ben McBride and customer Dermot Coey,

Homecoming for bronze medal winner Paddy Barnes
